Basic CD check, which is (as you correctly guessed) a way to prove you have the game. It's part of the overall copy protection scheme... ie, the looks for a given copy protection and looks for ATIP from a CDR.
Go to Gamecopyworld.com for a No CD check .exe file to remove this annoying problemJust do yourself a favor and backup your original .exe file, as you will need the original to update the program.
