Sadly SP1 does not uninstall well. It leaves pieces of itself that will continue to give you problems. You could try the repair option, but I have heard that once SP1 is installed its not as effective. If you want to try this option see this thread:

If that does not work a reformat and reinstall would be wise. Just make sure to backup your important files before attempting any option.

Next time stay away from SP1... it's far too buggy for far too many of us. I can only recommend it if your system is still unstable after standard install and Windows updates have all been applied. Hopefully SP2 (reported to be summer 2003) won't be as buggy...but then again it is Microsoft

Agree with dxkim, have had probs with sp1 aswell.Best stay away, just d/l the updates you "think you need" i.e "outlook or explorer " and apply the patches XPEDITE+UNp+p (google search),up-to-date A/V and firewall you'll be O.K
On the side of the box it said "Install Windows XP or better" so I installed LINUX

I think that you are trying to run a Repair from the CD. If so, be sure that you have a slipstreamed SP-1 CD to boot and run the repair from.

This would only fix some corrupted files; if you are having problems with stability, it is most likely:
      1. Old or buggy drivers (try rolling back any recent ones)
      2. Conflicting programs or really poorly written ones ;-0
      3. Hardware issues (power supply, hd going out, need to do a chkdsk c: /f, etc.

*Usually the people that have issues with SP1 are those with really odd drivers (not signed or just poorly written) or odd software / software conflicts (ex: EZCD Cremator + other CDR software). I have been running SP1 since it came out, and have no problems -- and I have gobs of software, video capture, DVD and CDR software, graphics programs, network scanners, firewall, Norton AV CE, etc...

      XP is strange!

Go to the install but when it asks you tor repair say no! Then go for a fresh install....

Then it finds and old version and does an automated repair! Bizzarre I know 2 repairs in one install! But the secon one fixes everything in a second!

But yes as, said before you must repair from the SP1-Slipsptream if you have upgraded (or downgraded depending on your experiences with SP1!!)
