some help needed

after the installation in a system with win98se, of the adaptec easy cd creator 4.0 i've got a blank screen. I restarted in safe mode, uninstall it, and then when i boot again i took the following message: WHILE INITIALIZING DEVICE CONFIGMG: WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR.YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.
I restarted a lot of times but without any result. Any idea how to fix it?

Take a look in c:\windows\system\iosubsys

Boot into dos by pressing F8, choose boot to dos, go into directorey c:\windows\....

take a dir , and rename the files (*.vxd`s ) that easy cd ... put in there, rename these..
And reboot..
This should work it out

anything you want, just give them new lastnames . like filecd.vxd to filecd.old or filecd.vxx, it is smart to keep the filename and just give them new "lastnames", just in case....

Did this happen "immediately" after installing Easy CD Creator, or did the system function for a while before this happened? Just disregard this if you are back up and running after svgusta fix. One more thing...you don't happen to be having this problem on a Micro-Star International MSI-5169 motherboard?

i tried all these above but the system still gives that error message. All that happened immediately after the installation of the easy cd creator 4.0 and the m/b is an ABIT

Can you remember exactly what you did JOHNKAMP, which files did you rename ?

i renamed the vxd's that according to their properties where made by adaptec. i changed the ext. to "old" and then when i took the same message back i renamed again to "vxd"

Hello JOHNKAMP, I`m sorry that I cant help you more on this, but if you are running win98 se, these are the files that needs to be renamed. Found them in a old ghost image.

Cdr4vsd.vxd
Cdralvsd.vxd
Cdrpwd.vxd

I am unsure if there are more..
I have run into this sometimes, and I have solved the problem by renaming roxios *.vxd`s

Can you tell exactly how many files there are in your windows\system\iosubsys directory and which burning apps you have innstalled ?

Click "Start", go to "Settings", and choose "Control Panel". Double click "System", and choose the "Device Manager" tab. Now choose a device. Start with "System devices". Highlight "System board" and click "Properties". Choose the "Driver" tab and push "Driver File Details".
Look in the white box Does it look like this? C:\Windows\System\vmm32.vxd (configmg.vxd).

If it reads C:\Windows\System\vmm32.vxd (configmg.vxd) it is telling you that the driver being used is configmg.vxd but that is it loaded from vmm32.vxd instead of as a stand alone file. If it was loaded from a stand alone file then the entry would read C:\Windows\System\configmg.vxd.

configmg.vxd is: Configuration Manager Virtual Device for the motherboard

It may have been changed or replaced by the Easy CD install. If it has then you may have to extract an original from your WIN98 cab files ( Win98_47) and put it into Windows\system folder

Here I learned something cadjak
I knew this file contains "more" files or is a package of different *.vxd , depending on your hardware. But I have never had the nerve to replace it with the "packaged one"

I have same configmg problem as John which arose (I think) when I was installing a Logitech webcam - I didn't notice any problems after Easy CD but I have just clean installed masses of stuff over 3 days. The config.vxd was in parentheses which I have fixed but still not luck. Can you think of anything else I could do...I can only open in safe mode so can't get a windows cd to repair installation.

I was looking for the controversial "VXDFIX", but found dead links everywhere.

VXDFIX is (was) a tool that replaced VMM32 (a compressed combination of several VXDs) with the individual ones - some say the indivudual ones perform better, crash less, while others say it's a complete red herring, and that the VMM32 saves memory - I may have a copy somewhere.
