Problem with Internet Connection in Windows 2000

When i create a new Internet connection from the icon "Network and dialup connections",
although the connection is present when i right click in the internet explorer icon and choose
"connections", there is no icon in "network and dialup connections" for the specific connection in
the control panel! Also when i conect to the internet from internet explorer (i have selected " always
dial my default connection") there is no icon in the taskbar that verifies my connection even if i
select it from the option "show an icon on taskbar". I have scanned my computer for viruses but
      it is clean. Any help?
