      Question

y do u even bother with a login for winxp if you're the only user, u might as well do a boot password, that way if u forget then u can just reset the CMOS

use root/administrator to reset the password....

IF you forgot the password to administrator then maybe a format will come in handy...there are softwares which allows u to access xp without passwords...but I forget the name of the app....heh

Son changed password to login with only only one user account, I also tried to reset with passware v5 to 12345 but still will not let me login. Shure glad that I "tested" this software first. Unless someone has a better idea---I don't want HRS involved so beating is out of the question...LOL There must be another way.

Hello Howdy40, I have used Passware v5 (1234567889101112)many times on XP.
It has never failed,Can you tell on which OS you created the boot disk ?

    10. #10

      xp pro

booted from cd, hit f6 to load floppy created with passware, screen showed drive to change pass on, changed to 12345, rebooted to login screen, entered only account on screen--12345 and it reverts back to blank line to enter password--tried again to same conclusion. Booted again and repeated process--no good.

You booted to the only account you could see, but when you booted with diskette to change password, could you then see the name of account it changed, are you sure you logged in with the username for the changed account ?

(just trying to see different ways..)

      not shure

believe that the drive with xo pro was the only thing showing. Do not remember if specific account other than default administrator was mentioned. There is only one account on this system and it is not named admin... even though it has admin rights.

Can you remember when you innstalled XP. The first time you logged on, did you create an account for youself, or did you just logg on without any passwords ? Default admin is administrator, try to use this with the reset password, Im sorry that I cant help more..

      Thanks for trying

After going through the process again, when I reboot there is only one login name and 12345 will not let me in. Could not see any steps missed but still trying.

      Found it!

May help someone else with simular problem. Start in SAFE MODE and it will show admin account. For some reason xp will not show admin account if another user is created to login with password on normal startup. In safe mode the admin account or any account with admin rights will show up to allow login. Another hard drive safe, son's behind safe and no HRS. Created admin account with strong password and gave son user account without admin priv to prevent future mishaps

      Howdy
