Linux does not need ANY modem drivers, a properly tuned kppp or xisp or whatever ppp daemon client is enough- unless you mean Winmodem drivers (some sort-of-modems which rely on other pieces of hardware and their drivers to operate...), which is strictly a kernel issue- some new winmodems are added in every kernel revision- and the kernel builds are a task for www.kernel.org and not Mandrake or any other distribution vendor. Since now there has been a stable kernel revision for Man 9.1, ansd up to date the status for Mandrake 9.2 has switched to Release Candidate 1, and RC2 is expected within a few days.

And here I am still struggling to install Mandrake 9.1 on my IBM thinkpad A30p laptop. Now if only they had a way to make sound card work immedialtely:-) But I am persevering because I want to wean myself off Microsoft. Knoppix is good for that but mandrake being the real and full thing is giving me headaches, and at the most inconvenient times ...
thanx, scarecrow.I`ve always had a winmodem as far back as I can remember, and I went to http://www.linmodems.org and downloaded the relevant modem driver for my kernel (This was months ago..) Not tried it yet.It would have been nice in the original package though-lol
Some winmodems (eg Agere/Lucent AMR modems) will never work under Linux, as the hardware vendor is reluctant to offer any sort of support to the kernel builders.
Mandrake has a nice online update feature, where you can download the latest stable kernel builds. One good thing with Linux is that you can always boot the same user/desktop using several different kernels, each one serving a different purpose!

Mine`s not a Agere/Lucent-it`s a Rockwell variant...The most excellent old Diamond Pro-you know the one-served me well for many years.I`ve never upgraded it because it`s served me well 4 many years...
