what os

i dled max linux os.
i havnt tried any of the max or linux type of os.i had split my drive up & left 5gs setup for linux.
i did the floppy disk & went my way trying to install it.all it kept on saying was not enough room.in the end there was 11 gs out of the 40.it did give a warning about clearing one part so i let it do it its self.
was amazed how quick it had installed.chuffed to bits i reboot.wallop nothing left.iv just lost loads of big dl.
i put partision magic floppy in to see what had happened.i had 1
25mb section with 23 mbs left.the other 38gs was completly took up with this yellow linux.
everytime i restarted i couldnt even load the desktop up.
it had told me to make a new password for the root
all it kept on doing was wrong login.but if i put root then the password it got a semi logon,
then i got a reply you have mail.
carnt see why as everything had been wiped of previously.
it has took hours to even get xp reinstalled due to this lilo coming up.yet i had used the pquest floppies to delete the linux of & reformat for xp.
it made out all is wonderful with any other os.
& being its not ms i was hoping to have a play at least.
what has gone wrong & how do you log in anyway.
i tried the couple of things it said,but havnt used dos before.
for instance
/boot:
/rsu: . well something like that

was it just a bad install? but did it 3 times & all were the same
25mb then the 37gs with me room.

didnt learn,read a few of the post here & went back to installing.
after hours of reformating i got my xp back.so i came on the forum to check a few things out.
the os was max os linux gemini beta. noticed this on 2nd time around.
i had split my drive couple 8 gs for xp.then the rest for the linux.
i didnt format the linux one,& the xp one was hidden.
as i tried to install the linux,came up with not enough room (14g)
so i deleted the spare 8g.went on to install fine. but when it came to logging on.just said install password for the root.
same as befour.i tried everything fdisk & help.it just came up with
/:hda & hda1 ect. tried these & nothing.
booted up with the p quest floppies & it had wiped the whole computer again.25mbs drive with 23mds spare.the other 37g in exstended looking yellow with all 37g took up.with no space left.
& when i tried to get some hd space back said was to full & i needed to defrag.
it has took me all day & night to get the computer back to what it was.
im hoping it was just a dodgy linux as i want to try one.
but do they usaly boot straight in ready & working.
or do you have to mess about typing these dos type of words.

i will do a bit of searching,& try the mandrake 9.carnt be any worse than ms os.pluss they seem to have a few things thrown in.
