After receiving a brand new sooper dooper dvd-rw duel layer thingy-me-jigger
For Christmas, and not really knowing a great deal I did the bizz on the old search engine and came across this little nest of forum bliss. 2 days later and even more confused than ever, thought to my self what better way to start my journey of DVD godliness than to register...so I did... and well to be honest I’m stupid and I don’t mean a little stupid... ALOT. Which means questions!!! and I have quite a few, Don’t worry cos I’m trained heavily in the art of the "search button" so I should be ok but just in case I thought it best to pop my ugly mug in to here and say Hi, Hello. And Happy New Year.

Right all that said and done, I’m off to start reading and learning, at the same time forgetting older things (if only you could get brain upgrades)

The only stupid question, is the one that isn't asked...

Better to ask what media should be acceptable for your drive, than go and buy 100 of the wrong stuff, for instance, though there are no absolutes. Some drives will burn all but the very worst, and make a decent job of it, while other drives tend to have a "favourite" media that can even change with firmware version.

Get the Nero Infotool (if you have Nero, it's probably already installed with it, this is for people that don't have it ... Nero is not required for this tool).

This should report the drive model, and the firmware version, from which we will probably have several opinions on it being a good, bad or intermediate drive.

Firmware is the software component of hardware... a motherboard has it (the BIOS), a drive has it (even hard disks, though updating firmware in them is rare), a graphics hard has it.

On many things, like a motherboard, the firmware is mostly concerned with the initial setup, and the main reason for updating it is to support newer processors.

On a CD or DVD writer, the firmware does a lot more, and can have a big impact on the performance with various media.

It depends on the drive, some come out with absolutely rotten firmware, and really need updates, while others come out pretty well tuned, and only need an update to add new media at full speed, otherwise a new 16x rated disk would be used at a default speed of 4x or similar.

The other argument on firmware, since updates can and do go wrong, is to never update unless you actually have a problem that the update is expected to fix.
