2 day old Pioneer 106 Owner :)

Hello all,

Finally joined the DVD+/-RW bandwagon and bought a Pioneer DVR-106D. I got it two days ago, and was pleasantly suprised to see the 1.07 version firmware already installed. I ordered it with a 25x spindle of Bulkpaq 4xspeed DVD-Rs, with the Princo dye.

I had to lose my DVD-ROM (Acer DHM-G48) though, as I didn't have enough mounting screws for my new drive!!! lol (Yes, it was an OEM drive that I bought) Thinking about getting some more screws and reinstalling the drive as the primary slave along, and using it as my main ripping drive.

The first burn I did was a backup of some data that was chewing up my HD space, using Nero 6.0.0.11 - it went well. The second burn ended up being a coaster though I was using Alcohol 120% to burn an *.iso image, and it gave me a weird error about 10% into the disc. I reinstalled a newer version of Alcohol 120% and so far it seems to be OK. Officially, I have burned 4 discs and 1 coaster, but one of the discs I burned (a PS2 backup) doesn't boot in my PS2, but it shows up with all the data when I stick it in my DVD-RW drive. Must be something about the way I backed it up....

Anyway, next up is trying to get enough courage to update my firmware to the RPC1 1.07 firmware with the 12x ripping speed.

I have the same drive and firmware if you get uo the courage to flash it let us know how it went and if you had any problems, Iam theinking along the same lines but to scared to stuff up a good drive

Welcome to the forum!Go to the Console Gaming section for tutorials on Ps2 backups.

@ Poco81 If the drive works fine...no need to flash it.BUT if you decide to anyways just make sure there is no disc in the drive.Most times they recommend turning DMA off.......and don't interrupt the flashing process,and reboot when prompted.

I've had mine for about a month now and love this drive.

I have updated to this firmware and have had no problems whatsoever. But flashing is always a risk, so do it right with the proper precautions. The drive will rip faster to be sure... but I have yet to hear anyone get 12x though.

I'm no stranger to flashing, having flashed all my previous drives so far. But still, flashing a drive that less than a week old seems like tempting fate!

I probably will eventually do it though anyway, cos I just can't help but tinker with and tweak my gear.

@TheOneandOnly Since your used to flashing your hardware go head with this one! Now since it's 2 days old and say you did some how damage it by flahing it , I would play dumb and take it back to the shop and say it's not working as it should! Hint hint! Or like you said just get some screws put your old DVD rom drive back in and use that to rip and the A06 to burn..
Not that I'm trying to encourage folks to flash their uints and to take it back to the retailer if it goes ass up.

If I get it right the Flash Prog actually canges the record speed to 2x on DVD-r or am I just ignorant

I just purchased a Plextor PX-708A that shipped with firmware revision 1.01.The first thing I did was upgrade to revision 1.03.I had checked around to find that 1.03 was an improvement first.I also made sure the writer was working properly.No problems here,but did prepare as explained in earlier post to you.

Like if I flashed it, and my drive goes belly-up, and I returned it, could the supplier I bought it from tell if i tried to flash it?

If you use the proper firmware for your make/model you shouldn't have problems.Most flashes are Windows based,and straight forward,just follow instructions.

I agree I think the one think that will make a bad flash is losing power other than that must people can flash with out a problem.

There have been some bad experiences too - reported here in the forums!

I probably wouldn't hesitate to update with "official" firmware later than the supplied version - if updates for media compatibility etc. are in progress, most drives are likely to have outdated firmware when you get them - but one user noted problems with writing after using the 12x rip / 2x4all write hacked firmware.

Burners are expensive, readers are cheap ... I know what I'd sooner mess around with!
