      Hello from Carl

Why I am looking into this:
      **********************
I have been making DVDs of my home VHS tapes for about 6 months. I am finding the quality of playback to be unreliable. Occasionally, I will get choppy playback, sound synch problems that would come and go, and large pixels when viewing videos with dramatic contrast (candles on a cake in a dark room). Although buying a better DVD player would hide some of these problems, I am investigating what I can do to improve my techniques before I begin back on my labor of love.

What I would like to end up with
      **************************
1.Transfer my VHS videos to DVD+R with menus and chapter buttons.
2.In addition to the DVD, transfer one copy of my movie to disk in some suitable format to be used to make more movies in the future should all my DVD disks become unreadable.
3.Most importantly, achieve reliable playback and better quality than I am currently getting if it can be obtained within a moderate budget and is relatively easy to use.

      What I’d like to learn
      *****************
1.Ways to get a VHS video into the computer. Currently I use a Dazzle DVC80 device to capture the video using MovieStar5.
2.Ways to darken and lighten the video and ways to cut out bad scenes and transitions. Currently I use MovieStar5 to lighten or darken the video on the fly while capturing. I also use MovieStar5 to edit.
3.Ways to produce a back up copy of the movie in a popular format that will likely be supported well on into the future. Currently I make MPEGs with MovieStar5.
4.Ways to add menus and chapter buttons. Currently I use DVDComplete to author and burn my DVD. I like how you can easily scroll through the movie and add chapters which then automatically create menu buttons.

      Hardware Details:
      ***************
      Computer: HP Pavilion 724c
      Pentium 4
      512MB ddr sdram
      XP home edition
      80 GB + 150 GB Hard drives

      DVD Burner: Verbatim VBTDVRW1A (DVD+RW/R)
      DVD Player: Apex AD-1201
      Video Connector: Dazzle DVC80

      Current Software Details:
      *********************
MovieStar5 – to capture (using a Dazzle DVC80), edit, and render MPEGs
DVDComplete – to author and burn my DVDs
