A 54-year-old British man broke his leg after falling 3m while walking above a *****t beach.

The man was walking along a path on a cliff above Congwong Beach – a *****t beach in La Perouse, in Sydney's south-east – when he fell.

A Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter spokesman said it was unclear how or why the man fell.

"We're not sure at this stage, and if it was (because of the *****t beach), he's not going to admit it," the spokesman said.

The man was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
