When you do decoding and burning on the fly 12X might be high in some slowish systems. Of course it could just be Nero, it has done much worse than that.

I've got a Sony CD-RW CRX160E 12x/8x/32x and my computer seems to think it is working fine. When I pop in a burnt disc of mp3's, I can play them and it recognizes the disc. Everything looks as if it should be working. When I went into Nero to burn an Audio disc, the first thing I noticed was that I could only choose three or so speeds. 4x, 6x and 8x I *think*. Usually I was able to select 12x. So I went ahead and tried going with the 8x... then I get this error with nero:
SCSI targer error
Could not perform start of Disc-at-once
Burn process failed at 8x
I have no idea what's going on... I tried using the default Windows XP burn folder and that couldn't write to the CD either.
I'm running a Gateway 700 mhz w/ WinXP.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Are you sure the CD was completely blank?
Are you sure it wasn't a CD-RW (highspeed) - the range of 4x to 8x would suggest this, as I'd expect a 12x (CD-R) drive to reach as low as 2x (or even 1x) on CD-R media.

I know, I usually never choose 12x but now I can't even SELECT it. Something is wrong with my burner or something.
Someone please help me.
I just tried burning with CDRWIN and I get this error:
ERROR: "START DAO RECORDING" command failed on device 1:1:0
seems CDRWin does have the same problem as Nero; please try it again with Nero, save the Nero log file and attach it here;![]()

CDRWin never was able to do true DAO or RAW burning (even that fake RAW "Arnold-style" burning it has been using- and that's Jeff Arnold and not the current CA exterminator...) with Sony 140X and 160X burners and their clones.Originally Posted by Gonk
