I've had a 20 Gig 2nd Gen player for almost a year now that I'm quite happy with. No problems to report, just plays and plays.
3rd Gen is newer, is slightly redesigned (new controls, is a little smaller, has a docking station), and has some extra features (on-the-fly playlists is the only major one though). But the battery life is 20-25% less time. Also it uses its own proprietary plug now (instead of standard Firewire plug as before), but adapters are becoming available.
I use mine all the time at home, in the car (better than a CD changer IMHO), and at work. One of it's best features is that besides being an mp3 player it's also a large capacity Hard Drive. I can drag and drop large files (Gigs) quite easily between work and home.![]()
