      Question MSI DVD Writer

When I was at the comp fair at Newcastle racecourse this morning, I was soooo tempted by a DVD Writer I hadn't seen before - an MSI dual format that could, like the Sony one, do CDR's at 24x, unlike the likes of the Pioneer and NEC. I didnt, thinking maybe wait 4 months or so and get a 8x one, hopefully down significantly by then.

BUT - the question is, anyone know what this is in origin ? Like, is it made by whoever makes the Sony (they're so similar is why I ask) ??

That's funny, saw one at my local fair too, didn't get the model number though.

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=498 - this is the one on their site...

HD-Burn, 8Mb buffer, and Burn-Proof(TM) - now if that's true BurnProof, that cuts down the possibilities to only those entitled to call it that.

Seems to be pointing to a Sanyo chipset, same lineup as the Optorite - come to think of it, HD-Burn seems to be a Sanyo technology, first seen in the Plextor?
The Optorite (DD203 ?) also shares the respectable CD-R burning speed, but if you use CloneCD, Alcohol, Blindwrite etc. - hang on to your Liteon CD-R as there are very few DVD writers with accurate EFM.

It's not worth being an early adopter of 8x DVD - media availability and cost could be a serious problem, after paying extra for the 8x drive to start with.

Damn good advice there. I was very very VERY tempted to get this, but are you saying that it may well not record CDR's at 24x ? What about the Sony with the exact same characteristics (not visually though) ?

I've had Sony DRU-500A for about 6 months. I don't have any complaints at all
