Question Sony and their "Atrac3plus" software - any alternatives ?

I bought a new Sony MP3 personal CD walkman, and while I am delighted with its performance, the software that came with it to burn my mp3's into "Atrac3plus" mode is to say the least, CRAP. Atracplus is half the size (allegedly) of MP3's, similar to wma. Quality is acceptable, but its the damn crappy software. You can be on for sodding ages, (an hour and a half on one occasion) then inexplicably it takes a dislike to one of the tracks and closes, losing EVERYTHING you've taken ages to change to Atracplus. So, does anyone have any idea on another prog that deals in this "Atrac3plus" thingy ? I'd love to dump "Sony Simple Burner"..........

      A penny saved is ridiculous.

(But I think all new Sony walkmans can NOT playback ATRAC3 plain stuff, just atrac3plus, not sure).
      No codec for atrac3plus, afaik.
Real Producer plain and pro have a non-ACM ATRAC3 codec included.
Have you tried decompressing to .wav first and them using the Sony software? The program may abort when it finds clipped frames within the .mp3 files, something which is the norm for lo-fi MP3 encoders. Or it may be that it cannot manage VBR coded MP3's directly- ATRAC is AFAIK constant bitrate (CBR) files.

jroc: It's the same codec like the one I posted above... and it works with any application that can handle ACM codecs (Audiograbber, EAC, Feurio...). But 1. I'm still not sure it will work with Sony walkmans- and 2. the filesize will be quite larger than ATRAC3plus.

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/ - Audiograbber is now freeware - use it with the CODEC as indicated
