      Question Configuration

Can anyone tell me what is the "best" configuration for my two H/Ds and DVD and CD drives as I have been told that my current set up slows down the computer and/or reading/writing?

They are currently set up as one HD and DVD player and the other HD and CD writer with the HDs being the master on each ribbon.

I have Win98SE, an Athlon 1 gig and use Nero 5.5 for the burning software.

      Any assistance is appreciated.
      Regards

      David

If you want to copy on the fly at the highest speed, you have the right setup.......
If you burn most of your files from harddisk:both HD connected to primary ide channel, burner as master on secondary channel, and dvd as slave.....

Yeah I agree, mine is set up the same and is far better than how I had it before.

Smooth as silk (now I've cured the slow boot up and shutdown problems)

      Now I'm flyin'

The thing is that if you have optical drives in the same chanel with your HD, the optical drive slows down your HD

Even better, is go purchase an PCI ATA-100 or 133 controller. You can put your hard drives on them freeing up your Mobo's IDE channels for your oprical drives. Now you could put one optical on each IDE connection as masters.

To save money, just purchase a standard ATA controller (unless you want RAID) as these are often half of the RAID controllers. You should be able to find a good brand for less that $45 USD. Hell, Maxtor gives them away free in many of their ATA-133 drive packages.

Thanks to all that replied in such a short time. I will try it out this weekend.

Naturally if I get a problem I know who to turn too!
