PS2 networking

i am having problems connecting my PS2 to pc via crossover cable to the pc network card. i have the PS2 with built in net adaptor, pc showing low or no connectivity on the lan icon, and PS 2 shows no connection found. have tried to change the ics followng the microsoft help guide but just end up getting a 1003 error when i ok other users to share my internet connection.
i have 15 mtrs of cross over cable could this be a problem? and am using windows xp home any ideas?
