Smart & Friendly Mach 12 cdr/rw

I have one of these scsi external drives and am not able to get it to recognize cdr media. I use Nero 6.0015 the latest burning/ware. When I try to burn a data, audio, video, etc. the program ejects the cdr and asks for cdr/rw media with the burn speed set at 4x which is the rw/burn speed. It will in fact burn the files to a cdr/rw disc. When I put a retail cdr with an installation on it such as Win98, MSFrontpage it will sometimes read it but sometimes not. It refuses to look at cdr media that has been burned by another cd recorder. I am using verbatim and memorex media.

My scsi controller is adaptec 2940uw and I have the cdr/rw unit terminated and the controller termination set to automatic. The scsi address for the cdr/rw is 5. It is the only drive atached to the external connector on the controller.
