      no it's not possible to turn codecs off for the internal one and using the same codecs successful for the external drive; so this can not be the problem;

      compare the region code between both drives in Windows' device manager;
      anyhow it may be a hardware problem; check the internal drive in an other PC;

      Hi thankyou for your reply my drive is now working again but i do not know why this is what i did
      1) changed drive letter to the letter used by my ex drive (ex not pluged in) drive still not working
      2) changed back drive now working

      can anyone explain what may have caused this ?

      3) there is 1 film the drive will still not play "casualties of war" (retail) but it plays fine in my ex drive
      can anyone explain why this one film will not play in my internal drive ?

      i can't;

      if it is an original, pressed DVD it might be the copy protection; if it is already a burned DVD it might be incompatible/disliked media;

      Check if there is any problem with your internal dvd/cd drive check it on another pc and if the problem is not resolve then use external drive as internal drive with help of databus there is a port for databus on motherboard connect external drive databus with in the port and use it.
