Crossflashing Philips dvd8701 to Benq ?

The Benq is the maker, but normally, I'd be an "If it aint broke don't fix it" but theres extras available for the Benq that isnt for the Philips, and the Benq firmware is apparently so much better than the Philips (and more frequent) I'm tempted. But as I once had a nasty experience with updating even the damned firmware once on my wife's MPIO mp3 player once, I'm unsure. Any help and assistance would be greatly appreciated !
