Setting Booktype to DVD-ROM for DVD+R and DVD+R9 (you cannot alter it for -R) assists DVD players that were designed before DVD+R recognition was an issue.
For DVD video use, DVD+R9 (double layer) should ALWAYS be booktyped as DVD-ROM - compatibilty with players is pretty miserable otherwise.
As I understand, it's a "make it work at all" tweak, where needed, and not a "make it work better".
Not sure if it does any harm to set it to DVD-ROM when it's not needed.
