A Few weeks ago I bought a Sony DW-U10A (DVD-R & DVD+R)
I was advised NOT to change it into the DRU500A.
I lived with that but I made various searches & from what I
discovered the U10A is an OEM with (AFAIK) no Sony back up.
It is in fact parts wise the Sony DRU500A (which costs quite a
bit more than than the U10A0) (just the firmware etc that is different)
I changed my mind & flashed it into a DRU500A & then upgraded the firmware to the latest.
More reading here on the firmware page (Tnx to Seven_NL) with links to the patch etc
Here
I have had no problems since doing this BUT remember U Flash at your own Risk.

Also, whats this about having to have your DMA switched off or something ? How's that done ?
A penny saved is ridiculous.
