Make Toshiba SD-M1402 capable to read newer formats via firmware?

I just burned my first DVD-RW with my Sony PX-708A
I user "RW" for testing. This disc is a data mode 1 disc with 1,292 zip archives in a subdirectory.
My burner can read it, but my Toshiba SD-M1402 reader cannot read it.
The reason I archive with mode 1 Joliet, is to make my discs readable by any windows system.
I found the manual in PDF for my Toshiba, it states DVD: DVD-ROM (DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18), DVD-R (read)

This drive is less than a year old. Can it be made to read DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW ??
I have firmware 1012

I searched all over Toshiba's site and couldn't even find 1012 firmware anymore which is an update from 1000. I got this firmware last yr somewhere.

My main question is: Can older DVD readers be flashed to read these newer formats.
I also have an older Sony DVD reader in my other computer. It won't read the DVD-RW either.

Both my DVD readers give me "Device not ready" in windows explorer and the yellow drive light stays on.

I hope this doesn't mean I have to buy 2 "New" DVD readers just to read my data DVDs (DVD-RWs)

I haven't tried DVD-R or DVD+R or DVD+RW yet. This could get expensive really quick if my readers cannot read any burned DVDs

You burn a DVD, not a CD and mode1 does not comply to the OSTA specifications.
The DVD you burned is a genuine coaster. Use UDF 1.02 instead, or at most UDF with joliet extensions.
I guess you used Nero and it's stupid/useless DVD-ISO mode... Those disks could be readable at some systems, but they are way out of the book standards.

They have a region free firmware for your drive but I don't think that will fix your problem. Also I don't see a flash back. But try this if you want to take a look. Toshiba SD-M1402 I would think its a burning problem. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thank you, Scarecrow, you have a point. All is not lost though because I used A RW and I can erase it. And this disc is accessable with my DVD burner. Not bad for a first try. I did use Nero DVD-ISO
I'll try UDF 1.02 and UDF W/ Joliet for these data discs.

Thank you for your post too PC-GUY, I have the "latest" firmware 1012, if it is actually the latest. Seems like there is not as many firmwares for readers as there are for burners, DVD, or CD.

I'll make the disc compliant to book standards, UDF 1.02 and UDF W/ Joliet, and see if these "ancient" readers can read it.

I hate to replace hardware that is only a yr old, I like to get as much use out of it as possable.

I erased it and used UDF 1.02, ISO Joliet mode.
Now my Toshiba SD-M1402 "sees" it in windows explorer as an audio CD and a 44 byte audio track in the root directory. When I select properties of this drive, it incorrectly reports 1.99GB, actually this DVD has 4.3GB as shown in Nero when in the DVD burner.
The Toshiba also shows the label, (volume name), incorrectly. It is shown as "Audio CD". The label I used is "0216_7592"
This DVD works properly if I use my DVD burner to read it.
(This is a single directory with 1,292 zip archives in it).
Am I getting closer to a usable DVD? (Thanks for RW to experiment with).
