      Lite-On™ DVD±R/RW – Sony™ DRU-500AX ?

      Hello Folks,

On Wednesday 26 February 2003 DigiTimes released an article stating that Sony and Lite-On joined a strategic alliance to produce DVD±R/RW drives.

If you review the referenced Wednesday 26 February 2003 DigiTimes article I believe you would be able to conclude that Sony DRU-500AX and soon to be released Lite-On DVD±R/RW will be one in the same.

Quote From DigiTimes - “The two companies were said to be cooperating on developing DVD-Dual chipsets, scheduled for launch in the second quarter. These highly integrated chipsets combine support for the DVD+RW and DVD-RW standards and could help DVD-Dual optical drives/players become mainstream products.”

Many knowable individuals are aware that Sony CD-RW drives are re-bagged Lite-On drives. In light of the Wednesday 26 February 2003 DigiTimes article it would be safe to assume that the Lite-On DVD±R/RW will be a re-bagged Sony DRU-500AX. Or maybe it’s the other way around and the Sony DRU-500AX is actually a re-bagged Lite-On DVD±R/RW.

      Regards,

That price is for the retailers..More than likely the actual retail price will be around the original $199.00 target.

Yep, gotta agree with Coaster on this one. The Sony DRU-500AX and the new LiteOn probably are the same drive inside. Some of us actually speculated about this on another thread a month ago.

Either way, I await the day that this Lite-On DVD±R/RW drive hits my local store. Even at $199 USD, it will be a steal!

I wouldn't mind spending even $250 for this one at the time I have to trash the same sum for a Toshiba 5002 or some $ 340 for an A-05 and $ 390 for the Sony...

Volume Shipments of DVD±RW Drives May Be Delayed

      Hello Folks,

A recent article posted at h**p://www.dvd-recordable.org states that volume shipments of DVD±RW drives may be delayed. This article specifically mentions Lite-On as being effected by this delay.

So it appears that the eagerly awaited Lite-On DVD±R/RW might not be appearing on the shelves as soon as expected.

      Regards,
      Coaster

The Liteon and the Sony are NOT the same drive, but they have certain similarities. But I guess that after the Liteon appearance the Sony price wwill go down. I was tired of waiting and ordered an expensive DRU-500 ($390 incl.VAT), and that after I was informed that the Lite-On appearance will be delayed at least till mid-June.
