Lite-On dual format DVD 4x recorder release confirmation
Posted by DoMiN8ToR on Wednesday 12 February - 14:05 - Source: CD Freaks.com
Cheeser used our newssubmit to tell us that he received a reply from the Lite-On support department when asking about the release date of the on our website announced dual format DVD recorder. Earlier we announced that Lite-On would release a dual format 4x DVD recorder for about $200 and this mail confirms it.
Thank you for your interest in our Lite-On Products. We plan to have a 4x DVD-RW that will support both +/- formats . As the battle of format wars continues, we at LiteOn continue to watch and monitor the progress. We plan to introduce our DVD-RW product in Q2 2003.
Regards, Sales & Marketing
Of course these drives are highly anticipated and a lot of you will have to decide to wait for these drives or buy another brand. Discuss this subject in our Lite-On Forum.

I was oh so close to buying a Sony for myself, not very patient when it comes to waiting!, but this is great news!
Now I have the stamina to wait!![]()
I dont hold my breath... in fact I would still opt for the Sony, which is proven.

Only thing is if you wait to long then a new burner will arrive and leave the Liteon and Sony behind.Thats why I got the 105 now so Im able to start this dvd burning lark now and get involved before it passes me by.

Proven to cost twice as much...also what is one of the most respected CD burners and DVD drives on the market? You guessed it Lite-On....What makes you think their DVD burners will be any different...also I heard a rumor that Lite-On's factory is going to start manufacturing Sony's pickup head or something for them.Originally posted by scarecrow

I've got a 104 for now...but if the Lite-On turns out to be as good as their CD burners, I would definately buy it over a Sony, especially at almost 1/2 the price.
I've been waiting for this dvd burner for a long time. I've been tempted many times to get the sony but, I'm going to wait. Oh man has it been hard. Reading posts about people making their own copies of dvd's, plus I've collected all the dvd burning progs that you could ever want. Even a few of my friends have dvd burners and make some movies for me. Come Lite-on hurry up,lol.
Liteon makes the best CRW burners out there for sure, but the jump on the DVD market is not really so seamless as some would like to believe.
The Sony costs a lot, because it deserves it: the other DVD burners fail to come anywhere close.
I DO hope that te Litey will be a great DVd burner, but I dont cross my fingers.

The Sony costs so much because it has no competition. When the Lite-On comes out and if it proves to be a good product, the price of the Sony will drop like a stone. Another reason to wait. If the jump to dvd is tough, why is Sony trying to get Lite-On to manufacture parts for their burner?

You guys are lucky that you can get stuff like Pioneer with rebates and promotions..... in my country, the price difference between the Sony and the Pioneer is €36 = +/- 36$......so,for 36$ extra,I bought a drive that can handle both dvd standards,RAW DAO writing and it's a fine audio reading device.........Originally posted by soundforbjt

If the Pioneer was +/- 200$ here, like in your countries, for most of you guys anyway,I would've bought it.......but with the minimal price difference here,I decided to get the Sony......the Pioneer was € 359,the Sony € 395.......
Dont agree with this at all m8.Had my 105 since before Xmas and its works just fine.As there is still no real decission on what format the dvd scene is going to use, for doing dvd-r the Pioneer is still top dog. Also the 50 quid difference in price here is also a factor. This is all done from experiance as I have done over 250 burns with my 105 so far.The Sony costs a lot, because it deserves it: the other DVD burners fail to come anywhere close

Excellent point bud! If LiteOns may not be up the high quality of the Sony Corporation and a Sony burner, then why bother dealing with LiteOn?!Originally posted by soundforbjt

I can see it now....internal parts made by LiteOn, external parts made by Sony. But of course the Sony is better, it's all in that Sony badge
I would not be too surprised that LiteOn is now getting into the DVD market, because it already makes internal parts in some of the drives already mentioned here. This is supposedly how they got into the CDR market in the first place, since they have been making internal parts for CDR drives for years now.
Lastly, does it not seem strange to anyone (even just a little), that LiteOn is releasing a 4x DVD-RW that will support both +/- formats just like the Sony?! Mere coincidence?! Don’t forget that LiteOn OEM CDRW drives have those shiny Sony badges on them quite a bit lately. Makes you wonder how much of this DVD +/- Sony’s innards are LiteOn![]()

I agree with you there. For that difference in price, the choice is the Sony. Hopefully when the Lite-On comes out it will be cheaper for your part of the world as well. In my somewhat limited travels outside of the US, I've been amazed at how much cheaper our price in some areas of products are. Though I scored a couple of nice deals on electronics in Singapore.Originally posted by roadworker
