Microvision is a additional pulses that is added to the signal to confuse the recording device that the signal is rising and falling .It works on the agc system of the recoreder. Some dvds have a hidden menu that when you are playing them the dvd player will remove the ofending signal this is often called VCR friendly. Another way is to buy or make a macrovisio remover and pass the signal (anologe) through the remover befor recording it.
I think that somwhere on the net sombody has produced a software solution for this but I do not know were this can be obtained

To turn the macrovision off the PC dvd playback, try tvtool, it might even be handy for what u are trying to accomplish . But to backup films u can rip the vobs to the hd & prepare a dvd read layout, there are quite a few tutorials around the net on how to do this sort of thing.

      Improvements For DVD Player

      John Baxter,

There are two types of improvements for a DVD Player. One concerns VCR Friendly (Macrovision) and the other one is Region Free.

      Suggest visiting the following sites.
