Question about DVD to DVDR!

do you have to have a DVD player in your comp to make this work?

If you mean a dvd rom and a dvdr, the answer is no. I don't think the discs have enough capacity to hold a full image. Probably going to have to rip the ifo and vob files to hd then encode into dvd format. Nero 5.5.8.2 will burn it. Read the tut's as far as encoding goes. People here seem to know what they're doing. One more thing. VCD uses mpeg 1, maybe why it wasn't working right. SVCD uses either 1 or 2.
