DVD-R DL Maybe Coming Soon
DVD-R DL specs one of the topics at coming DVD Forum conference
Posted by Johnny on 14 September 2004 - 18:33 - Source: DVD Forum Pioneer announced its plans for a dual layer DVD-R format almost a year ago, about the same time as Philips and Mitsubishi first announced the DVD+R DL format. But while the DVD+R DL specifications were finalized in March and DVD+R DL writers were released in May there have been almost no news about the DVD-R DL format. DVD Forum has however now announced that it will hold a conference in Japan 7th October and the DVD-R DL specs will be one of the major topics according to the agenda. Date: October 7, 2004 Place: Intercontinental Tokyo Bay, Tokyo, Japan Major topics: -HD DVD formats HD DVD video demonstration -High speed recording spec’s (DVD-R,-RW,-RAM,-ROM) -Dual Layer DVD-R spec’s -DVD-Audio status -DVD worldwide market trend & a forecast -DVD copy protection technology -The new DVD Format/Logo License 2005 Seeing that DVD+R DL has already reached 4x speed and compatibility has proven to be very good when DVD-ROM book type is used the question is if DVD-R DL will have anything better to offer when it arrives? When do the first DualLayer burners come? Many manufacturers announced new burner models for the next months, which will support the DualLayer technology. First burners available in the trade is the Sony Dru-700a for approximately 200 euro. Thus the burner is scarcely twice as expensively as other "normal" models, but very many cheaper than the first dual format burners of the past yearly (DVD+ and r). The provisional dates of some manufacturers
The DoubleLayer standard V2 is adopted end of 2004. The scanning rates 4 to 10-10-fach will contain. BenQ will bring the first quadruple DL burners toward at the end of 2004 and the first 6-fach-Brenner to 2005 on the market. If it not right can someone fix the translation? If you can get the right price for ya Sony, then get the 108 now, the 109 will be the same as the 108 plus the -R DL support. I dont see that as a big issue really. The 109 will of course be dearer for a while as well. This all assume the Forum approves the -R DL format anyway.

You could always even wait for the 110 Scooterpig.
![]() I've decided to just stick with my 105/106 combo for now until any really radical changes come around. For me all I care about is the quality of the burn and 4X more than suits my needs. Oh I am such a Ludite really.
