Convert DVD to avi for editing

I've copied some VHS tapes to DVD using a combi VHS+DVD recorder.

I now want to edit the DVD on the PC to cut out rubbish etc.

I've got Nero and have used Nero Vision to create DVD from scratch using my own avi + mpg but how do I convert the DVD to a file format that I can use with this program?

Use MPEG2VCR (www.womble.com) to edit the mpg (vob) files directly, no need to convert to avi then back again.
