DVD software

Hi i'm newish here and have read alot of post as i'm intersted in backing my dvd films up.

I have DVD Movie Copy by Steinberg and it doesn't really cut the mustard so to speak. After selecting DVD to DVD copy and after waiting 16 hours....
(PC Spec. AMD XP 1700 512 meg ram Win ME)

I was left with a video_ts.vob file (137 bytes) and 4 video_ts.101 files, which were mpeg2/m2v files (i think). Well i could have done that with smart ripper in about 20 mins. The version i have is 285 meg on a cd, and comes with MovieXone which isn't bad for DV editing. All it did was rip the Film (no Extras) to HD.

I thought it was supposed to rip the whole DVD and convert the video so it all fitted onto dvd-r. The amount of time it tokk reminds me of when i used to convert to VCD with Flask on my K62 500. This software seems to have stepped back in time.

At the moment i am grabbing 321 studios DVD copy Plus 4 (all 308 meg) is this DVD CopyX...?
And has anyone tried this as you all know what it is supposed to do..?

I have ripped one dvd film to dvd r with all the extras and for anyone who wants to know what to do to make 7 gig fit onto 4.7 gig. Encode to VCD and encode the Audio to 48000khz and burn back to dvdr as you can fit about 7 hours of vcd onto a dvdr.. you can adjust the bitrate for better quality.. Trial and error if your dvd player will play it mine supports all sorts. You can even do the menus to

out of curiosity what software do you use ? I have burned many movies also , using dvddecrypter/dvd2avi/maestro , but am tempted to try this route albeit via svcd .If this can fill the dvd-r with the extras great !

You mention that you can do the menus as well would that mean you can have chapter links just as in a regular dvd ?

Well there's quite a few ways to do this.

1st. Smartrip it off the dvd.
2. Dvd2Avi to de mux it. and choose encode audio. So that you get an mpeg audio file.
3. TMPGEnc the video file into a mpeg 1 stream.
4. convert the audio to 48000htz with TMPGEnc. (i have never tried using the AC3 audio with mpeg 1 it may work like that )
5. Mux the video & audio with TMPGEnc make sure you use MPEG 1 setting and that the AUDIO is still 48000hz.

If the AUDIO isn't 48000hz it won't work. Thats the most important thing.

Now do this with as many films as you want to put onto dvd-r if it's only 1 film then you can play with the bitrate a bit. I don't think you can't use SVCD/MPEG2 settings but i have never tried them. so do this with all the Video & Audio on the DVD.

Burn off including menu's etc with your favourite dvdr software. I use Nero or Primo.

It is a bit of trial and error to get the best quality. You could do your own menu's and put 4 films on 1 dvdr.

PS sorry i forgot you need to pre master the dvd files.

This can be done with Spruce up as it allows importing of MPEG 1 files. Some of the other software may re encode it back to MPEG 2 format which means it will fit less on it.

Here's a slightly different way which i just did with A Knights Tale.

1st I ripped the dvd with DVDx straight to MPEG 1.
2nd i Demuxed the MPEG file with TMPGEnc.
3rd Converted the Audio to 48000 hzwith TMPGEnc using SSRC.
4th Re-Muxed the Audio with DVD Wise.
5th Authoured and Built Menu with DVD Wise.
6th Burnt with Nero.

And it works the FULL 7 gig DVD onto a DVD-R all the Extras apart from Subs and Extra Languages, But you can add these if you wish. DVD Wise supports multiple languages.

The film is just over 2 hours long in total there is 3 hours of film, as for final size it was just under 2 gig.

The DVD-R plays on all my dvd players even one i have that is very picky.

As for time to do this aprox 4.5 hours not bad hey.. i could have got another film on there and maybe raised the bitrate abit to.

I hope this helps some people to fit dvd films onto dvdr albiet not true dvd quality..... but not bad either.
