encoding problem (newbies)

I have an avi movie file that I am trying to encode and then burn onto DVD. I have sussed that the file has to be encoded to another format and I am using HT mpeg encoder 7.0. When I play the file normally using a media program called VLC media player some times the file contrast and properties have to be adjusted to brighten up the picture to make the movie watchable. The problem that I have is that In the first few frames of the movie the screen turns green all over and then when the contract/brightness is adjusted the movie play correctlly.

When encoding the same file I end up with a movie that Stays green all over for the full lenght of the movie. I dont understand what happening and If this can be fixed in any way.

Well VLC doesn't use whatever codec you have installed and HT mpeg encoder doesn't use VLC's decoder.

What version/build of XviD do you have installed? Also is it being used for decoding or something else?

Latest builds of XviD can be found here: http://celticdruid.no-ip.com/xvid/
