No codec required if you use rlb245's suggestion of CCE, it produces probably the best quality MPEG2 streams and its the fastest as well.

Maybe a further explanation of what your trying to do would help.

thnx guys for your replies. i used to use huffyuv with vdub as my cap program and i just had one dropped frame per minute of captured video. now i reinstalled my win98se coz i deleted some files and causes my system not to work properly. now i tried to reinstall huffyuv but i can't for some reason so i use some other codec and i get a lot of dropped frames, i mean a lot. i never had this problem before. any idea how to get my system back again?

      Now I see !

Huffyuv is by far the best AVI codec if quality is your main criteria, PicVideo JMPEG the next best.

But as you suspect, the problem is not with the codec or VirtualDUB but with Windows.I would have done an Upgrade of Win98 from DOS rather than a re-install. Have you installed your M/B drivers?

Try AVI_IO as an alternative to VirtualDUB, its not as versatile but drops almost no frames.

thnx chickenman. the o/s that i reinstalled came with my hp computer in case something goes wrong. it is actually a system recovery cd and i loaded it and turned my computer on. that's when it tries to reinstall what was originally installed, all the configurations done by hp. now my questions again are:
      1. what do you mean by install from dos coz i have a start-up disc
but i don't have the dos diskettes.

      2. i'm thinking of reformatting my 50 gigs hd with 4 partitions, c,d,
      e and f but i will only reformat my drives c and e (e is where i
installed all my programs. will that affect other drives too? i'm
going to use my recovery cd on c and i will format e manually.

      3. lastly, what do you mean by m/b drives?
      where can i get avi_io?

      thnx in advance.

Q1. I suggest you beg, borrow, steal a full copy of Win98se from somewhere. Boot up your Start up floppy and select with CD-ROM support. Put Win98 CD in CDROM, go to it and type setup. A DOS installation will "fix" more problems than re-installing Windows from Windows.

Q2. Formating C: and E: only will not affect the other partitions, but programs or games or whatever may not work after you re-install Windows as many programs install a few essential files in the Windows/System folder, which you formated! So you may need to reinstall those programs as well.

Q3. M/B drives= Mother Board Drivers, the ones on the CD that came with your motherboard/computer.

Sorry I dont have a source of AVI_IO at the moment but I'm sure a search at Google will find it. I can post a crack if needed.

thank you so very much chickenman for your speedy replies. i have tried avi_io and still drops a lot of frames. i have win98se on hand but i'm not sure if the reg code given to me would work. what if it doesn't work? can i just reinstall my system recovery cd again? thnx again.

Run Regedit (from the Run windows) then search for your name or to whoever the name that the Windows is registered to (you can see that in ContolPanel/System)

It can take a while to find your name, then within that group there will be the registration number listed, write it down and use that number for all future installations. You will have no problems then.

i did try install my win 98se cd i got from my friend and the product key provided also works. i was so happy and then i reinstalled huffyuv but again, it's the same problem. when i first opened up vdub and click on Video Compression, huffyuv is there.
and then when i click on File Capture Avi and click again Video Compression, it's not there. as opposed to what chickenman said, i't not on the codec that drops frames but it's on Windows system, i strongly disagree coz before i reinstalled this cd, i changed my codec to divx 4 low motion and it drops one frame per minute only as opposed to some other codecs i've tried. anyways, i can't seem to solve my problem so i'll stick to divx but i really like huffyuv. the video quality is far beyond comparison.
