Sounds like there is a problem with the AVI. Check it with DivFix and DivXRepair.

I have just followed the tutorial "How to Convert DivX, AVI, ASF and MPG to VCD" to convert a 30 minute, 90MB MPEG 1 into a VCD format. It seemed to work fine and created a 300MB MPEG.
However, I tried a second MPEG 1 of around 90MB and did exactly the same as I did with the first one, but instead of taking 3.5hrs to convert the MPEG1, it took 4 minutes and only created a 7MB file that went for about 1minute.
I tried it a second time, following the steps in the tutorial and it did the same thing for a second time.
Any ideas as to whats going on here?
Thanks

so you want to convert a MPEG1 file to vcd??
vcd is encoded as MPEG1 if the res. is
352x240 and frames per sec. is 23.976/29.976 or 352x288 25 fps
then you don't need to re-encode
what are you using to encode???
