      Lightbulb A video recorder

I have seen machine that can take on input such as TV, tape etc and record it in a real-time mode onto a CD-R or CD-RW.

You can also pause the machine, if u want to skip over undesireable footages/TV advs.

Very handy machine. I think the price is around US$400

One of the brands is Serial and the other (i cannot remember clearly) starts with an 'M'.

Or alternatively get yrself a capture card with TV turner. Plug yr VCR into the TV input of the card and start captuing

A card that is capable of real-time mpeg I capturing costs about $100 and a card which is capable of real-time SVCD capturing is around $200. For that u need a burner and corresponding s/w.

      Enjoy.

I have just bought a Terapin VCD recorder from the USA (cost around $350 inc shipping)it records from any source even straight from DVD with 3 leads or scart and only loses a little quality. It's great for recording from your VHS home movies.....only downside I feel is it's real time recording so if you want to insert chapters into what you are recording you have to sit there and press the next chapter button but once that is done it's much better for watching on a DVD player....you don't have to keep fast forwarding.Hope this helps.

i just connected my computer to the stereo and tv, and that computer has a video card with tv out; i assume that's not the same as the video capturing card right? if so,what r some good brands to get?

      i'd like to
a/ record live tv shows, and
b/ record shows that i have taped on vhs

also, what softwares do u recommend for doing that? i want to turn them into xvid or divx. i'm very new to this streaming stuff so if u can be as specific as u 'd like.

      Thanks!

You need a Capture Card or a Video Card with Video In. A cheap TV Capture card is all some people want or a GForce Vid Card with VIVO or a standalone Cap. Card made by Canopus or Pinnacle are preffered by those that are going to do a lot of capturing.

      chickenman,

i'd be doing a lot of capturing b/c i want to archive my tv shows on my hd; i have seen gforce vid cards at the local stores before but i didnt paymuch attention to price etc b/c i didnt have a need for it then; so is gforce a good brand for my purpose in terms of quality and price overall? also, what software choices would i need once i have that card installed?

      thanks.

A GForce card is about twice the price of a cheap video cap card and will capture to full screen 720x576/480 no problems. I have one of these myself now and only started looking at capturing only last night. The sotware that comes with the card is a good start. VirtualDUB is also very good.

thank u chickenman! i def. will look into that option then; the card is not too expensive as I vaguely recall.
