PS 2 Back up

O.k I'm fairly new to this PS2 stuff so bare with me.

I've managed to back up my first PS2 game - Tekkin Tag
It works a treat. From what I've been told CD based games are the same as PS1 games.
Here's my problem.
1. How do you back up DVD based games? Can you rip the game and then burn it? What software do I need to do this?
2. I cannot seem to get my comp to recognise Madden 2001. It's a CD based game about 550mb. It works in my PS2 and my DVD player in my comp recognises it but wont stop spinning to alow me to do anything.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
