It's from the makers of PKZIP, it zips, it zips securely, it integrates with email, and the crazy guys at PKWARE are currently giving it away. It opens some other formats, and can compress to formats that many would not consider to be fully compatible "ZIP". But there lies the problem with ZIP - good old ZIP is essentially an obsolete form of compression, but with universal compatibility, while "new ZIP" (really should have been made "ZI2" or something) gives away that universal compatibility.
