avast! Home Edition is a complete anti-virus package for Windows 9x/Me, NT/2000/XP. It is FREE for registered home noncommercial users. It's certified by ICSA and obtained 100% mark from Virus Bulletin in June 2002 under Windows XP Pro.

avast! contains two GUIs (simple and advanced) on demand and on access scanner. It simply integrates with user screen saver, file explorer and mail client. Updates are simple as clicking one button - updates are smaller than 100 KB.

1. The free version has just one GUI: the simple one.
2. The older version (3.0.519.1) failed the latest February Virus Bulletin test under Windows NT, because of a highly debatable virus sample- in fact other AV makers have objected its usage for the test.
That said, I believe Avast is certainly the best freeware antivirus that exists by far.
