The same core as StarOffice 6 - but with any proprietary bits that can't be given away removed or replaced - or maybe just not added - also minus some of the bloat that SUN put in.

Staroffice 5 used to be available for free download.

      Abiword is another free wordprocessor

And 602Suite is another (smaller) suite - some say liteware, with additional options to buy.

      http://software602.com/products/pcs/
      602Text - Word processor - word compatible
      602Tab - spreadsheet - Excel compatible
      602Photo - Editor
      602Album - Photo Album
Spellchecker enabled by free registration - other features (eg. Thesaurus) are in the Plus (non free) version

Open Office does everything I have ever needed it to. It successfully works with all of my previous Word documents...and the best part is that it is free, that part is hard to beat.

Open Office is only going to get better, and when that happens M$ will have a really hard time justifying their expensive product for home and casual users. M$ Office may still have a firm strangle hold on the corporate market, but the landscape will change for the home user.

Often suggested as an option under "freeware Word processor", or other subtopics - where the only real gripe is the size of the download as you cannot have just one component.

Pricelessware nominated, 2003 - surely the process in alt.comp.freeware (newsgroup) must be drawing to a close by now?
