      Modem

Not sure if this is the write place to put this

I have a Lucent 5699 Int modem. Am getting very poor connections.
I do get V90 sometimes mostly v3.4, but speed 26-30. I have checked my settings all seems ok.
One thing I do get when dialing in is 'Receive Connect but CD was low, Waiting for signal to go high'. Then 'CD has been raised'
      Is this the problem.

      I am running XP sp1

      Can anyone help?

this could be a line fault contact you telephone provider and ask them to check the line gain and also at the same time ask if you are on a split line (this means you and the nextdoor hose/building are sharing the same line ) if it is demand a seperate line tell them you can hear them talking on the line or make something up then they will come try sort it out

But...... and this is a big BUT here ..... the phone companys are ususally only at liberty to provide a voice service line its usually in there contract and/or provide data transmission of 1200bps very very poor they DO NOT have to cater for your internet usage if the above fails to solve the matter then try change providers and see if that helps !!

also a point here is that most modems are usually software and depending on how good your system is you will either get good or bad results !? its always better to have an external hardware or internal hardware modem as software modems us both system RAM/MEMORY and processor time to work

      Thanks for the info

Have had line checked, they say no probs, but are coming out next week to have a look.

I would hope my PC has enough grunt for modem.
Its an Athlon 1800 with 512 ram.

I have looked at ext modems, One have seen at reasonable price is Netcomm Rave USB,

Any suggestions on what is a good one

Still getting CD is low and does not seem to use compression, but have just done a large download an averaged 5kbs, so much happier, thanks so much for the good advise
