      Question Intel P4 or AMD

I am on my way to upgrade my P3 1G to a faster one.

What is the best processor to use...

I read once that AMD is faster on rendering and normally better for video work, however Intell is better on many other aspects.

I also remember something regarding P4 2.2Mhz and up are on new technology which is different than the previous ones.

      Any suggestions ....

      Thanks,

      Karamany

hmm... if u aren´t sure what to buy ... just look @ the prices ...
I would prefer an AMD system ...

btw. the 2 things u need a real good machine for ...

      1. gaming
      2. video editing , transcoding aso.

      1. the real work during gaming does your video card ...
      2. AMD does the job very well ...

      Thanks elpresidente,

I have All in Wonder Radeon video card as well as Pinnacle DV500 Plus card.

I have 3 hard disks from which one is SCSI and I rarely play games (sometimes my kid play... but any way she will git my current PC)

I am afraid of using AMD as some incompatibility issues I read before... actually it was some time ago.. I do not know what the situation today.

Any way let's see other's comments..

      Thanks,

      Karamany

      AMD ROCKS

I was a pentium man for years. Matter of fact untill a year ago. I run this thing my wife call the wire monster. I have about 14 computers running on a network just for fun. All running different platforms and cpu's the best for games and video has been the AMD's Athalon & Tbird But remeber the mother board plays a big roll in this picture to.

I hope this helps you make a chioce you wont regret TTFN

      AMD pfffft

I have a Duron. The problems with AMD was at the start Duron has less capabilities. I can run all but DirectX8. Maybe 8a will work.

You need an Athlon XP probably. Problem is memory now or I would BE THERE.

      AMD rules

I currently have an Intel P4 2Gb at work but have just finished building an AMD XP 1.9 for a m8.

The AMD THRASHES my machine even though it's running less RAM - Intel has 1GB, AMD 512MB.

I test rendered a 3D Max Studio project which takes about 6 mins on the Intel and just over 4 mins on the AMD.

Graphics cards are the same and as elpresidente mentions this is the essential accessory for good gaming - go for any of the later NVIDIA chipset cards - the're the dogs

      Another happy AMD user

Thunderbird 1.2GHz (B version) on a rather obsolete AMD750 chipset (200FSB) - the only bord with enough ISA slots for me (2), just before I ended up dumping the old ISA stuff for other reasons! - DRAT!

Happily running DirectX8.1 against really crummy ATI RAGE 128 video card (with DX8 drivers!)

The Duron-Morgan (1000 MHz and above) and Athlon XP both support "SSE" intructions, so can run Pentium-3 optimized software at reasonable speed - though most things with SSE optimization probably also have 3dNow optimizations as well!

      pokopiko

I've read pros and cons about the Via based mobos. What board do you use and what are your main gripes with the VIA's?
If it was easy, it wouldn't be worth doing.

My DUM 2 cents again. A VIA group somewhere (?) had the video card problems with them. Update and then have to redo and put the old info back in them.

I gotta try DirectX 8.1. If that blows it is the VIA chipset.

I have just upped my AMD 1.2 (B) Thunderbird to a 1800+ XP Athlon.

The 1.2 ran for 6months on a VIA mother board (ASUS A7V) and I have NEVER seen a BSOD in that time, I believe the secret is good stable memory. I push my system very hard indead with Video encoding, etc.

The 1800 XP is only 1 month old, I just changed the motherboard (ASUS A7V333) and did not re-install Win2000. It uses the latest VIA KT333 chipset, and again it has never fallen over.

The speed jump from an Athlon 1.2 to a 1.8 has more than 1/2'ed my encoding time as well.

Intel stuff is fine as well, just way way over priced for what you get for your $'s. Intel is not cost efficient in my opinion, and never has been.

      poko,
don't put your foot in your mouth lol.
Unless you have tried & used something for a while, don't knock it.
I have read many complaints about every PC & every mobo & so forth. Nonetheless the majority of people are buying via boards. If they were so bad, I doubt they would continue with all their sales (however that isn't always the case).
On the other hand, I have tested quite a few mobos for AMD (as I help out with an AMD website) & also with intel.
There are pros & cons for every type of hardware. I personally like the via boards alla KT266A. Most issues people have had are due to winXP (& overclocking) & if you just let windows install its own drivers, you will encounter no problems (though I have installed them on a few PCs & haven't had problems either).
That being said, I do think the AMD 761 chip is also good, just not as good as the KT266A.

      *back to the topic*
Intel P4 isn't great for gaming (don't recall who mentioned that), but the same as all others. Gaming relies mostly on your graphics card & the SSE2 instructions from the P4 just isn't being used enough by enough apps to warrant its use yet (but probs by the end of the year).
For the money, you will get a bigger bang from AMD, though I like both companies (just think intel is overpriced right now *as ChickenMan mentioned).
Either way you choose to go, just make sure all your hardware is topnotch & you have a good warranty -- then you won't have many worries (as both chips work well for everything).
      Good luck.

VIA boards had a notorious "issue" with the Soundblaster live - though that seems to have been fixed by driver and bios updates.

VIA Drivers and some CD-R software can be an unhappy combination.

If I wanted an INTEL CPU, I would NEVER put it on anything other than an Intel motherboard - my old P200MMX on Triton HX was more stable for CDR than my current AMD/AMD - which I'm sure is better than anything/VIA.

I ran my VIA A7V m/b with a Sound Blaster Live card for all its life, worked absolutely to perfection. One of the best cards to allow capturing of movies and keep lip sysnc correctly. The best sound card I have ever had.

I have also run just about every know CDR software on the system without problems. I have only ever removed them as I didnt like their GUI or did nothing different or any better than another. (except for early versions of Nero 5.5x, but that was Neros problem, not the m/b or CPU)

Also I have ALWAYS run the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers, normally installed within a week or so of being issed. Again they have given me a substantial performance increase over the original Windows ones.

Back to topic, if you go Intel, buy an Intel chipset m/b. If you go AMD I would strongly suggest a VIA m/b over the poorer performing alternatives and more importantly get a quality m/board like ASUS, MSI or AOpen.
      Cheers,
      CM
