ADSL sharing

Can anyone help i'm having pipex adsl installed @ home my daughter would also like to use her pc on the net..

1. can we both use the adsl line at once?
2. do i need to by her an adsl modem?
3. whats the best app for networking 2 pc's together...
4. if 2 pc's were networked how then could i share the adsl line.

Once your LAN is setup, you can share the line if you are using Windows 2000/XP on the machine that is connected to the modem directly without any extra hardware.

Windows allows peer-to-peer networking as part of it's "feature" set so you do not require any software to allow the PC's to chat.

In the Network/Dial Up the last tab for the modem allows you set this up. It's not terribly reliable - strange that for a M$ product and sometimes refuse to dial from the remote machine.

WinGATE is also supposed to do this exceptionally well, although I have never used it. You can d/l WinGATE (cracked) from:

Ishare is another app that helps u out ...
hardware solution would be a ADSL ROUTER ..but they r to expansive...
the problem with software solutions is that the pc which has installed the adsl modem has to be online ....

As El said easiest way is a router you should be able to get 4 port router for under 50 quid.

here is the simplest cheapest method I have used.
Get any auto-switching hub 10/100 (4 port or whatever you need) & try to get 2 matching LAN/NIC cards. Doesn't matter the brand (PLANET make nice cheap ones that also work well in winXP).
Then just install one on your current internet connected PC & give it an ip address of say 192.168.0.1 (subnet always the same 255.255.255.0)
Then install the second one to your daughters PC & make an increment of 1 on the ip addy (192.168.0.2) with same subnet mask.
Now install any proxy serving software, like proxy from:
h**p://www.analogx.com (cheap & free & easy to use) *check what port it uses- as I forgot lol*.
All you do is configure your daughters web-browser & other apps to go through the right port used by proxy & vuala, she is on the net (easy as pie).
Ofcourse if you have a firewall, make sure to allow permissions for the proxy server to pass & your daughters PC. You can shut it down anytime you want (so if you are punishing her, she can't have access lol).
You don't even need to use the crappy ICS (internet connection sharing from MSN).
Ofcourse buying & using a DSL internet router will also do the job quite well, but they can be complicated to setup how you like it (one of the other members is still on it lol *no names being mentioned). They are a great solution for many though, but more expensive in my opinion but offer one advantage worth mentioning *you don't need the PC with internet connection on as the DSL routers rely on their own innitiative.
(also when you get your cat5 cables, they are straight through types, not crossed).
I don't like crossed connections from one PC to another.

1. yes - if setup properly
2. no - u only need the 1 modem - cos u will only have a single adsl connection supplied by Pipex
3. chances are you version of windows may already support ICS, if not there are a a number around - as the above posts have stated.
4. Read below . . . .

First of all - what DSL modem do you have? Is it Ethernet connected or USB connected?

a) you will either use ICS (one of the pcs has to be ON all the time - for the 2nd pc to beable to use the internet) can be done with usb or ethernet modem.

b) or have a network setup with the modem (acting) as a (internet) server with two pcs connected to it, ethernet modem only. Here both pcs can connect to internet without relying on the other pc to be on - as long as the modem is on and connected.

In both cases u need two network cards and ethernet cabling, in the latter u need either an extra hub or switch or dsl router, depending on the modem u already have.

If u use a USB modem - then chances are - your best bet is Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). If you dont already have a network between the 2 pcs - you need to fork out for 2 NICs or LAN Cards. Connect both pcs using a crossover ethernet cable.

Reading the above posts - there were a couple of good solutions for ICS software tools.

U can get really cheap (software based, doesnt have processing chip on board required cpu power) NICs from British Computer Fares - be warned most of them have crappy drivers (especially for WinXP).

I suggest a (hardware based) NIC from a reputable make - least this way you can be sure of good driver support, and less cpu usage compared to software based ones.

If you use ethernet modem - then you should already have a ethernet card. Then all u need to do is buy an extra one. In this situation you can also opt to use ICS, otherwise . . .

If you have a plain ethernet modem - then prob best to use a dsl router. If you have a modem that supports DCHP/NAT/Port Forwarding, then all you need is a hub or switch (switches are intelligent hubs and are faster)

I wont go into more detail about this as yet - just reply stating whether u have a ethernet or usb modem. Though Shadoe - has already covered some of the things i've neglected to mention at the moment.

I have a usb speed touch it's an ocean blue colour...the standard as sold by my isp pipex lan cards and cables are no problem to get hold of...

With a usb modem - the cheapest way to go about sharing internet over network is using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and connecting the 2 pcs with a crossover connection through 2 NICs.

If u have a laptop that you want to use on the network too, then u will need a hub or switch (as shadoe pointed out in an ealier post), and use straight (non crossover) connections.

And then the easiest way to setup ICS is using the Windows ICS wizard (i dont think Window 95 or 98 (pre-SE) supports it) unless you decide to use a 3rd party ICS proggy.

I suggest you should read shadoe's post reagrding seting the ip addresses. I would just end up repeating the same thing
