The New Radeon AIW cards are decent for capturing video, there are others as well.

Dvd's need to be ripped to circumvent the copy protections. There might be Macrovision disabler(hacks). There was for the first generation Radeon AIW.You can find tutorials by Chickenman for ripping in this forum. They create the best results.

If you have a dvd writer,Elpresidente can help in the DVD section.

The ATI radeon AIW is ok for video capturing but not the greatest, & support for winXP isn't good at all. Another thing to note is that there is no technology today to help you capture DVD in real time. Computers are still too slow (I would say you need around 4Ghz PC or more to do realtime).
However, as that crazy woodpecker mentioned =), using ChickenMan's tutorials on ripping DVDs will give you the best results. Ripping it to the HDD will only take about 5-15 minutes (or 1 hour if you have an old 3x DVD rom drive) with modern DVD-ROM drives.
Then the only long process is encoding the movie to VCD or SVCD. On average an athlonXP 1800 will take about 3:30-4 hours to encode 1:35 hour movie to VCD standard mpg, while an intel P4 2G will take about 4hours. Add more time for slower systems (about 10 hours on a P3 733), & add double the time or so to make SVCD.
Have no idea about DVD to DVD (first part is the same *ripping) but then use elpresidente' tuts on that.
Good luck & there are plenty of people here to help you along your way (but the tuts are straight forward & easy, provided you read them carefully).

Hehe...Yep Shadoe is on the money about the ATI Radeon AIW.Drivers are slow coming from ATI.I have all the XP updates, and my Radeon is working fine in XP now.

I have a P4 and cheat a little bit.I capture tv programs and home movies realtime with better quality by cheating a bit.I create custom vcd's by"cheating".My Pioneeer DVD-333 standalone will play almost anything ,so I capture at a higher bit rate.I use 1700 kbps(versus standard 1150).I use a constant bit rate of 1700 to create my vcd's.The quality is much better this way,I then turn off the compliance rules in Nero to burn vcd's.

For copying commercial dvd's the tutorials are the way to go.Print them out,and refer to them I get excellent results!

Sorry I think I should bring this to lite, but tomshardware is $H*T place to read. Although some revues look good, they are never consistent on their reviews. Changing results all the time & tom is known as being intel' bitch-boy.

Another disturbing thing about tom-dic*head, is that he is trying to ruine the rep of the best writer/reviewer they had there.
Have a read here for info:

      h**p://www.vanshardware.com/articles/2002/03/020317_THG_Slander/020317_THG_Slander.htm

      PS
for a better place on reviews go to:

      h**p://www.ultrapenguin.com/

where they have reviews from multiple sources on everything computer related.

    8. Looks like shadoe wont be inviting the intel bitch boy round for tea then!!
