Unhappy Acer model 1610-137 CDRW Problem

I just got an Acer cdrw and fitted it to my computer.
I am using xp.
Xp picked up the new drive with no problem.
when you open the draw the light comes on but thats all.
The computer says its working ok.
its Acer model1610-137
It wont read any sort of cd.
I tried to burn a cd and it said to put in a cd
Can sombody please help

sounds like ur buner's laser is dead,with all the other circuits still workin..
is the drive bought as a second hand?

Can you see the drive in Windows Explorer and Device manager?
