Hi bud.I just wanted to say this...Instead of taking a chance, why don't you find the real thing.Take the guesswork out of it,and make sure you get a Liteon.Sometimes the rebadgers change brands or change the id.string in the bios. Then you have to wait for long periods of time to get firmware updates.Everybody seems to be able to find the Liteon 24102B.It definitely does the trick.

Oh,and yes,I do remember you from Cdrforum.

You are right about just getting a Lite - On but I couldnt find them until I checked Newegg

They were not listed their so by chance I clicked on Black cdrw's and I saw it then

Is this the correct one ...... LITE-ON LTR-24102B-02 24x10x40 CDRW BLACK - OEM

Yep, that is the correct writer model#.It will do audio fine, but it can't rip protected audio cd's such as Cactus data shield. It's one of the best right now.

Oh,sorry but no direct links unless they are forum links.I fixed your link.

      I picked one up

What settings do I need with it ... because I know with my Plextor 1210a 1.4 firmaware I need to check 'AWS'

Should I use it as a reader as well because I know my toshiba 6602b reads SD 2.51 pretty fast

      What is cactus shield music

Hi bud, your Toshiba will be fine as a reader.Just use fast error skip for SD2.You don't need AWS with the Liteon. It makes perfect SD2 backups.

Cactus Data Shield is an audio protection, that stops you from making backups of Commercial cd's.The Plextors are among the best to defeat this protection.

The first thing I did with the drive after installing it was to check Sync Data Transfer and DMA in WIN 98 SE and then reboored. I then poped the first music cd to check the ripping speeds with EAC. The 7 minute song rippied at 3.6 x speed ... isnt that awfully slow for this drive

I know DMA is checked and the bios is reading it as a DMA 4 device

How can I better benchmark it to see if its ok

      Thanks

Take a look at this link bud.Fix it and Copy and paste into your browser. You need to to test with a full cd also,as the drive will build up speed.Sync data transfer should be disabled.

I just used CD Speed .85 and this is what I got:

      Average: 17.46
      Start 9.34
      End 18.31
      Type Z - CLV

This was with a retail copy of a Thelonius Monk Jazz CD

Just to be clear, are you saying that with the Liteon drive I should NOT check Sync Data Transfer and only have DMA checked

That is correct it (sync data transfer)should be disabled. You need DMA with the Liteon.
