I want to connect two pc using...

Both PCs have network cards 10/100 mbit and actually i've them with the crossover cable now i've to instruct XP to connect on Win98 (the botebook is already configred i guess). I'm looking for manuals, example, tutorial on how establish a connection between the two, plz help.

In your past system you were most likely using NETBEUI protocol.
      Sound familiar?

NetBEUI (NBF) is a protocol suitable for small networks. But, support for this protocol in Microsoft Windows has been discontinued in XP. It is not installed, nor is it available by default under Windows XP. However, the NETBEUI drivers are still included on the WinXP CD-ROM.

      \VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI folder.

      To install NETBEUI,
      1. Copy nbf.sys into your %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\
      directory
      2. Copy netnbf.inf into your %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory
      3. Open Network Connection Properties under Control Panel
      4. Click the Install... button to add the NetBEUI protocol

Using a crossover cable might work. It used to be a cheap and
easy way to connect two computers. But some NIC (especially newer ones) don't like the connection.

If it does not work, don't fret. Routers are fairly cheap now and are highly recommended for faster and reliable transfers.

      Crossover should work without problems

Of course it will depend on your NICs

if you got your NIC's from a respectable manufacturer u wont need to worry about drivers in XP and so on - i would suggest 3com if you dont already have some. Just that its difficult to get good working divers for some LAN cards.

      The easy way

All you need to do is set it all up in XP using the Network setup wizard and give your computer a name and workgroup and then once the wizard concludes it will ask u if you want to save settings to a floppy so you can use the floppy on the 98 laptop and it should configure eveything for you on the laptop. The method generally uses TCPIP as the protocol.

It should be much easier using the wizard to do the work for you
