PSX2 v1 mod advice needed

I have a v1 PSX2 and want to mod it. I've looked up many guides, comparison charts, ect., and it looks like my options are Messiah2 1.33b, DMS3 ModChip Version 2, or buying a new pre-mod. I have several questions before I continue on with the process, and these boards seem the best place to get answers.

1) Is there any benefit to upgrading to a new (v8-v10) system?

1a) If so, does anyone have some links to reputable stores for pre-mod systems?

1b) If not, which mod would be the better choice? Links to reputable stores woud be good here too.

2) I've read somewhere that you should NOT use a cold solder gun/iron on the board. Using one would make the process much quicker (and safer for my extremities ). Any suggestions?

3) Anyone have any confidence building techniques before setting solder to board? My hands start to shake when I think I'll be with out my PS2.

I would personally not even bother to get your v1 PS2 modded. Most mod installers do not touch anything pre v4

Where abouts are you located in the world ? I might be able to recommend some reliable pre-mod sellers

I live in the US. Joliet, Illinois to be more exact. We used to have some decent pre-mod sellers less than a block from me, but there isn't much a market here for imports so they had to close their doors.
