Do I have to both with this when backingup my ps2 games? Why bother to verify after it burns, if it didn;t burn properly then its screwed anyway right?

To save you time to find that it's screwed up: Inserting the disk in the console, playing for a while and then freezing and all these goodies. Personally I always use the verify option for my burned DVD's, but then each one on his own. Just imagine burning say a Windows bootable disk and after many minutes of installing finding out that it's actually full of read errors...

Using recordnow max I always use the verify every round option and haven't had a bad burn yet.
