n00b questions (by me of course)

      Hi there guys,
My cousin just got a ps2 and he's prone 2 messin his cds up so i wanna make him a few backups,

      got some questions:
      1) is there a lot of risk involved in chipping it myself?
(im not a complete fool so im sure i cud get round it, e.g. i can open up a pc and know what the hell im doing, add expansions and stuff )

      2) are the non solder chips less effective?

      3) is there a way of running backups without chipping it ?

      4) once its chipped can you play normal PAL games ...

      thanks again peepz

It's not a big risk in chipping something. If you have a lot of experience then sure it's not hard. But even some electricians have had troubles installing a mod in a console.

Yes they are less effective. Not many possiblilities.

Yes there is, Flip Tops and the Knife technique, and slide cards. I don't recommend this because it will ruin your ps2. Modchips are the way to go because they're console friendly.

I'm assuming you have a NTSC ps2 and you want to play PAL games. Yes it can be done with the installation of a modchip. A DMS3 and Messiah are capable of doing so. I have Messiah and I play PAL games all the time.

      thanks dude,

      just found this website

      http://www.playstationfun.com/ps2.html

      http://www.playstationfun.com/installe2.html

check it out it seems ok,,
could u explain how non-solder mod chips are less effective ?
are they less effective because they are less compatible with games, or more likely to ruin ur console ??

      thanks again

Non solder mods are less effective because with them you can only play backups by using swapping GS's or AR2's or even Swap Magic discs. Whenever you want to play a game you have to swap about twice. With them you won't be able to play PAL games. They're not always going to accept the backup in the first try. And most important of all they're only compatible from v1-v6. So they may not work on ur ps2!
