      Question mp3's skipping

Now I know there isn't a lot of info here but my mate is trying his luck at ripping audio cd's to mp3 but he's created mp3 file is skipping 2-3seconds every 5 seconds. so a 4min tune is ripped but when plays only takes 2mins to play and jumps all the way through.

he's hardware is (from memory this bit)

      1600xp athlon
      256mb ddr
      40gig hd
      ecs mobo (i think)
      win 98se
      artec 40x speed writer
artec 16x dvd rom (i think it's artec)

      we have tried
jack the mp3 ripper (just gave an error when trying to run saying could not intialise alt init command????????)
      audio catalyst 2.1

both gave the same jumping mp3 files.

      hope this makes sense

      dirty disk !?

ripping too fast !!? slower ripping speeds make more sense to get a good copy !!!

jitter problems again with drive spinning the disk too fast !?

      scratched disk !?

error control !? some programs can adjust/compensate for errors but do it too well and leave gaps !?

what drive is he rippin with !? test the other it may be a fault with the drive !?

try different rip methods there are a few options such as burst and fast mode in EAC also try lettin EAC set the drive up with default settings and see if you get the same problems !

also check that the hard drive isnt in need of a DEFRAG because that can cause a bad ripp too as the drive struggles under the strain of transferring or receiving the data from the reader

if all this fails check the disk is not protected with cactus data sheild or other music /audio protection !?

      cheers all

Thanks for all your help and i will give those suggestions some tests and see whats going wrong.

I had an idea it could be that the drive was spinning the dics too fast. Yet it plays fine as an audio cd through media player.

also i did let EAC detect everything and set the options for me but the jumping still occured....strange

      cheers folks

Don't encode directly to Mp3, try to rip the tracks as WAV first to see if they are OK. The best way to understand your problem is do it step by step to find out what's wrong..
You can be anything you want to be, just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be
