Well, I've never heard of ST1...it may be a special format
just used by the game, in which case you're out of luck.
I would suggest trying to open a small one( if there
are any), in a hex editor, or something as simple as NotePad.
Look at the first couple of lines, there might be something in
there that will give you an idea of what it actually is.
For example, a .wav file will have the words RIFF and
WAVE at the beginning, and you could try changing the file
extension to .wav from .st1 and see if it'll open.
Make sure you do this on a COPY of the file and not
the original. I tried this once with another game, and, even
though it let me open the file and alter it, when I put it back in
it wouldn't work right.
The only other thing I can suggest is take whatever
editor you're using, write down all the formats it supports,
and rename a copy of the file using each of the supported
extensions and see if they'll open and play right.

btw maybe try 'mod' extension (they are similar to midi. jkat
